Portpatrick is set around a small bay with cliffs behind, with pretty pastel-coloured houses along the front. A former port for transportation to and from Northern Ireland, Portpatrick is now a low-key seaside resort.

Sea angling is a popular pastime, as is walking, for which there are plenty of options, such as along the cliffs to Dunskey Castle, which takes about 20 minutes. The Southern Upland Way starts from here, and goes all the way to the east coast, and takes a lot longer. There is an annual folk festival on the first weekend in September. |
